Algorithmic Growth
Reaction Diffusion
Jakub Petr
The “Algorithmic Growth” series focuses on creating organic, natural-looking shapes and patterns made entirely out of glass. My inspiration for this series comes from my general interest in science and my desire to popularize it through my projects. The bowl-like objects in this series are not replicated from natural patterns or sculpted by humans. Instead, they are parametrically generated using a software based on Allan Turing’s theory of natural pattern morphogenesis, which can describe countless known patterns in nature. The series is named after Turing’s seminal paper “The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis” (1952). The production process involves computer-aided manufacturing and traditional techniques of hand-made glass casting and polishing. These objects are produced in a small family workshop located in the North Bohemian region of the Czech Republic, where I combine traditional methods with a modern approach.
