
Hacking Silk

From nature, we know silk to be a strong, shiny fiber that has been used for various purposes since ancient times. In addition to its traditional applications, silk protein fibroin can be processed into films, gels, and solid foams with distinct morphologies. Researchers have taken an interest in these alternative forms of silk not occurring in nature due to their versatility as biomedical materials.
Hacking Silk is a material design project that builds on biomedical research and explores the potential use of purified and restructured Bombyx mori silk in fields of design. Fibroin films have functional properties such as high biocompatibility, tunable biodegradability and good mechanical strength, making them attractive for the luxury and fashion industries as well as for applying them in wearable electronics and healthcare devices.
Ingredients: silk organza, silk protein (fibroin), pigment.
