IVORY BY HVILA EDITIONS

Traditionelle Handwerkskunst trifft auf Zeitgenössisches Des
Hosted by design gallery hvíla editions, the IVORY exhibition invites twelve local and international makers to present limited edition pieces, each with its own creation story. Founder Anita Hansen curated the collection to celebrate ancient craft techniques, envisioned with a contemporary and artistic sensibility. The objects are meant to surprise people, and show how traditions can be re-imagined to create something new and unexpected. While the title IVORY implies a certain visual palette, it also, rather immediately, evokes powerful imagery with overwhelming implications. The historical, political, and ecological connotations of the title comprise more than a side story; they have inscribed themselves in the term “ivory” as problematic burdens. The exhibition opens a discourse around IVORY as a metaphor and its projection onto the practice of contemporary design. In newfound contexts, the limited edition pieces reveal their own narratives and invites viewers to consider each object’s cultural origins, the global exchange of ideas, skills, raw materials, and the potential for interdisciplinary cooperation. The selection of works include a wide spectrum of design including home décor, kitchen accessories and furniture pieces, but also fashion items and jewelry, that are in limited editions or made especially for the exhibition. Designers on show: Hana Karim (SL), hettler.tüllmann (D+US), Mapico (UA), nojin (D), nomad (D), oh-licht (D), Riccardo Masini (IT), Rita in Palma (D), Robert George (UK), Sasson Raifailov (US), Steven Haulenbeek (US), Veronika Beckh (D)
