VR glasses are still far from being as commonplace as a smartphone, a digital camera or a laptop. But it was not only due to Corona and the resulting trend to visit places and events virtually, that “virtual reality” became a highly relevant technology for examining its effectiveness for the creative industries and the design discipline and for using it in teaching. The first mixed reality applications were created in the Communication Design degree programme in 2011. This was followed by a groundbreaking bachelor project by Christian Ernst in 2017, a simulator for a self-driving car. This project was the basis for the further examination of virtual reality in the degree programme and the search for possible applications that go beyond the simulation of prototypes in product design or the application in games. Consequently, projects were developed that investigate the modalities of perception in VR or combine other high technologies such as artificial intelligence or brain-computer interfaces with VR.
