The contrast between an elegant and honest tatami with futon and a classic sofa particularly spoke to me at the beginning of the project. While the various glued materials of the latter remain hidden under the cover, the tatami reveals its materials and construction in a transparent way. I see this transparency as a simple but effective tool for an urgent change, towards a circular design.

The «mo» sofa and daybed strives for a formal lightness and represents circular design. A distinctive feature is its local and natural materials. As a durable alternative, its reduced construction eases repairs, recovering and re-circulation. The wooden frame is designed to be disassembled.

The upholstery is made of sheep’s wool and Swiss stone pine. It is an interpretation of the traditional cushioned compartments. The Swiss stone pine shavings provide natural moth protection. The high-quality wool is anti-bacterial, does not burn and absorbs 30 percent of moisture without feeling wet. Thanks to their proportions, the three cushions can also be easily ventilated and loosened up. In comparison to existing sustainable sofas with recycled foam, this design aims to provide an alternative to petroleum-based foam.
