As part of Berlin Design Week, graduate garment engineer Silvia Wald invites guests to a curated thematic evening at her Berlin-based Studio Aufschnitt. Under the title “DESIGN REAL – Material Research in the Design Process,” the event on May 28, 2026, on Boxhagener Straße will explore the journey from plant-based raw materials and post-consumer textiles through textile processing to industrial product applications.
The starting point is Silvia Wald’s many years of work in material development and textile production at the intersection of research and application. In the course of research into new filling materials, new approaches to fiber extraction and processing at laboratory scale have been developed in collaboration with partners such as the STFI Chemnitz and the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy.
In a rotating event format, experts from research, industry, and design will present their projects in short talks. The program is complemented by a Material Lab, where visitors can experience materials and prototypes firsthand and engage directly with the developers.
With contributions from nonwoven technology, bio-based material development, recycling processes, and product design, the event demonstrates how design actively contributes to solving ecological and industrial challenges today—in line with the motto DESIGN REAL.
