Embark – Circular Material Exploration

Explore the Circular Potential of Pine Bark

The workshop explores the properties and potentials of pine bark, a highly variable waste product of the wood industry. Through a series of interactive actions centered around pine bark processing from the raw state to the reintegration into the environment, the circular potential of natural materials will be investigated. The three key actions will be: Collaborative Bark Peeling, Bark Processing and Assembly and Bark Shredding and Mulching. The peeled bark will be shaped into modular pieces that can be assembled into a collective object. This object will be installed on one of the green spaces at the Arboretum, where it will remain on display until the Long Night of the Sciences on 26 June. During this time, changes in its color and form will be documented, showcasing the natural transformation of the material as it interacts with the environment. The bark object will then be shredded into mulch, which can be directly applied to one of the beds in the Arboretum.

Age: from 10 years
Max. 15 persons
Prior registration needed
Peeling can cause resin stains on clothing, so please wear old clothing.

The workshop is part of »Vegetal Companions«, a collaboration of Späth Aboretum with the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity« at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin as part of the _matter Festival 2025.
